The 3rd World Disability & Rehabilitation Conference 2018 (WDRC 2018) was organized by The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM), Sri Lanka in collaboration with Brandman University as the Hosting Partner and St. John’s Medical College, India. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Sri Lanka, and Tata Institute of Social Sciences, India as the successful Academic Partners of the Conference.

Inauguration Ceremony

The Conference was held on 12th and 13th November 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia under the theme “Global advocacy and rights of people with disabilities”. WDRC 2018 was chaired by the renowned key person in the field of Disability and rehabilitation Dr. Loren O’Connor (Assistant Vice Chancellor of the Office of Accessible Education and Counseling Services, Brandman University).

The opening remarks of WDRC 2018 were made by Conference Chair Dr. Loren O’Connor (Assistant Vice Chancellor of the Office of Accessible Education and Counseling Services, Brandman University) together with Mr. Isanka P. Gamage (Managing Director, The International Institute of Knowledge Management).

WDRC 2018 provided great platform for researchers, academics, scholars, and educators from across the globe to share their research findings with one another and to discuss their ideas in relation to the field disability and rehabilitation. The conference provided a refreshing experience for all, especially for the young researchers who had the opportunity to share their research findings on an international platform.

Technical Sessions

WDRC 2018 comprised of seven (07) technical sessions along with a poster session as well. The technical sessions were under the below themes.

  • Equalization Of Opportunities And Independent Living For Individuals With Disabilities

  • Policies, And Laws Promoting Rights Of People (Or Individuals) With Disabilities

PUBLICATION

All accepted abstracts for 3rd World Disability & Rehabilitation Conference 2018 will be published in the conference abstract book with an associated ISBN 978-955-3605-18-4. All full papers will be reviewed through a double blind reviewing process and published electronically with an ISSN 2513 – 2687 number in the proceedings with a DOI Number (DOI prefix: 10.17501).

Workshop on Breaking down Barriers for Individuals with Disabilities – Counseling Support


The workshop was conducted by Dr. Thierry Kolpin (Associate Professor, School of Education, School Counseling, Brandman University, USA) which helped participants to develop and improve upon their skills in assisting Individuals with Disabilities.

Through this workshop, participants were able to gain the knowledge and skills that can help them to be effective allies for Individuals with Disabilities and support them in both their sychological and physical realms.  This included working directly with Individuals with Disabilities, but also supporting them externally by advocating for them in ways that have direct effects on their Physical and Psychological well-being. The workshop content included the skills needed for counseling individuals with disabilities, How the counselor can best build rapport, How the counselor can best maintain the process, How the counselor can best engage the counselee, Interactive activities to help participants practice the counseling skills previously discussed, Review of material and added information to further support  participants  knowledge on skills

 

Workshop on Virtual Mental Health Delivery


A workshop on “Virtual Mental Health Services: using Technology to Reach Global Populations” was successfully conducted by the two prominent speakers in the field Conference Chair Dr. Loren O’Connor together with Dr. Thierry Kolpin (Brandman University, USA) which was open to all individuals interested in learning more about virtual mental health services.

The workshop was included with,

  • Demonstration of virtual technologies
  • Infrastructure required for successful implementation of this Technology.
